It happens more than you might think β€” especially with marijuana now legal in many states. You turn your back for a minute and your dog has gotten into your stash. Now what?
Β
We spoke with veterinarians on our Bark & Wag 15 Minute Vet Talk podcast about exactly what to do if your dog ingests marijuana. Here is the most important thing to know right away:
Β
Veterinarians do not care what you are taking. They only care about saving your dog. Get your dog to the vet immediately β€” no questions asked, no judgment.

Β
Why is Marijuana Dangerous for Dogs?
Β
Dogs are much more sensitive to THC than humans. What feels like a mild high to a person can be overwhelming and dangerous for a dog. The amount that causes serious problems is much lower for dogs than it is for people, which means even a small amount can cause significant symptoms.

Symptoms to Watch For
Β
If your dog has ingested marijuana watch for these signs:
Β
β€’ Severe depression or sudden personality change
β€’ Walking as if drunk or stumbling
β€’ Lethargy and weakness
β€’ Low heart rate
β€’ Low blood pressure
β€’ Respiratory depression β€” slow or labored breathing
β€’ Dilated pupils
β€’ Coma
β€’ Hyperactivity or agitation
β€’ Vocalization β€” whining, crying or howling
β€’ Seizures
Β
Symptoms can appear within 30 minutes to an hour of ingestion and can last several hours depending on how much was consumed.

What to Do Immediately
Β
1. Stay calm β€” panicking will not help your dog
2. Call your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right away
3. Be honest with your vet about what happened β€” they are not there to judge you, they are there to help your dog
4. If your vet is not available call the **ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435**
5. Do not try to treat your dog at home β€” get professional help immediately
Β
The sooner your dog receives veterinary care the better the outcome. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve on their own.

Β
What Will the Vet Do?
Β
Treatment depends on how much your dog ingested and what symptoms they are showing. Your vet may:
Β
β€’ Induce vomiting if the ingestion was very recent
β€’ Administer activated charcoal to prevent further absorption
β€’ Provide IV fluids to support blood pressure and hydration
β€’ Monitor heart rate and breathing
β€’ Keep your dog warm and comfortable while the effects wear off
Β
Most dogs recover fully with proper veterinary care.

Β
Prevention Tips
Β
β€’ Store all marijuana and cannabis products in sealed containers in a secure location your dog cannot access
β€’ Edibles are especially dangerous because dogs are attracted to the smell of food β€” never leave them out
β€’ Be extra careful at parties or gatherings where guests may leave products within reach
